Why taking time to make art can help us – a scientific study into the physical benefits of art-making. Scientists at Drexel University have shown how art-making reduces stress hormones, and can calm and soothe its maker. What’s interesting is that it doesn’t matter what our skill level is, something art therapists see in their practice all the time. Just after 45 minutes, the stress hormone cortisol in people was measured as lower in levels. I’ve heard clients reflect back their own insights on the experience – how they feel much calmer, that somehow the thoughts and feelings have been given space, that they have a channel, that they go into a more mindful space.
